Like molding clay, Jeymes Samuel stretches, shapes, and sculpts original stories out of unexpected elements.

He’ll reframe a traditional world like the old west by placing an unprecedented emphasis on the black experience as he did in the award-winning The Harder They Fall. Rather than follow the standard hero, he’ll adopt the perspective of a seeming bystander in the middle of extraordinary circumstances, which he does in the forthcoming The Book of Clarence. He’s the rare enigma equally at home behind the camera directing Idris Elba and Benedict Cumberbatch as he is sharing a track with Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) or Tori Amos. He personally breathes life into every layer of his art, writing the scripts, directing the action, producing the final product, and even composing the music.

Following success under the musical moniker The Bullits, JAY-Z and Baz Luhrmann personally sought him out to serve as Executive Music Consultant for the Academy Award-winning The Great Gatsby and its chart-dominating companion album, The Great Gatsby: Music From Baz Luhrmann’s Film. The latter bowed at #1 on the Billboard 200 and reached gold status. The creative partnership with JAY-Z continued when the rap legend recruited Jeymes to write and direct LEGACY as an accompanying short for his album 4:44.

This auteur’s vision was magnified like never before with the premiere of his debut feature The Harder They Fall. Led by an A-list cast of Idris Elba, Zazie Beetz, Regina King, and more, he created a boundary-breaking Western. He scored a BAFTA Award for “Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer” and 5 NAACP Image Awards, including the highest honors of “Outstanding Motion Picture” and “Outstanding Breakthrough Creative in a Motion Picture” for Jeymes.
The Book of Clarence is his latest film, and its soundtrack led by the blockbuster single “Hallelujah heaven” [feat. Lil Wayne, Buju Banton, & Shabba Ranks]. More to come.
